Saltillo wins thriller over 3x defending champion Pine Grove
Saltillo found out on short notice who their opponent at the Robertson’s Sportswear Challenge would be. They would draw the 3x defending state champion Pine Grove Lady Panthers.
Facing a halftime deficit in a big game against a quality opponent isn’t where you want to be.
Luckily for the Lady Tigers, Mya Bobo said “I’ve got this.”
The junior post player made a bucket and got fouled with 14 seconds to play to give Saltillo a big 38-37 win.
The win was a high point thus far for a Saltillo team that has been close in other games this year, including losing to #1 2A team New Site earlier this season.
“It was a big win. We think we can play with anyone and we are glad we got to take on a quality opponent late in the season to prepare us for the postseason,” head coach Titus Goree said.
Saltillo trailed 24-18 at halftime but they relied on their defense throughout the game to come away with the win.
Saltillo held the Lady Panthers to just 4 points in the third quarter while they went on a 12-0 run that included a pair of steals and bucket from Janiah Hinton.
After the Bobo basket, the Saltillo defense stepped up again, stopping a Loren Elliott drive on the final play to secure the win.
Bobo led with 14 points.
The win moved the Lady Tigers to 13-10 on the year. They are back in action in a key district game Tuesday against Lafayette.
